IEC 61595-3:1999 pdfd download – Multichannel digital audio tape recorder (DATR),reel-to-reel system, for professional use – Part 3: 24-bit operation for 16-bit media.
A requirement for media storing digital audio data with words wider than 16 bits has arisen in Ihe market, influenced by the availability of AD converters with resolutions higher than 16 bits, and the introduction of digital mixing consoles incorporating signal processing with higher resolution than 16 bits.
Digital multilrack tapes. with their enormous data storage capacity, are an ideal medium for such an implementation. The method described herein is also applicable to any other medium with minimum ot two tracks
2 Description of data recording
Each 24 bit data word is divided between two paired tracks A and B”. the bil assignments being as shown in Figure 1
Track B shall always contain the least signIficant 8 bIts of the 24-bit word. They shall be positioned in the least significant 8 bits (bits 0 — 7) of the 16-bit word in track B. The most significant 8 bits (bIts 15 — 8) of the 16-bit word of track B shall be filled with O (see Figure 1).
If pre-emphasis is used for Itie 24-bit word, this shall be indicated in the Sync/Control Word of track A. Sampling rate and other status Indication(s) shall be indicated In the Sync)Control Word of track A. A 24-bit recorded tape as described above remains fully compatible with existing standard tapes.
Unmodified machines reproduce the A” tracks with standard 16-bit resolution. The least significant bits recorded on the B tracks will play back resulting in signal data with a level of approximately —50 dB. The d.C. signal content is negligible.
